Hi, I am new to the tribe, and thought I would kick start the New Year with a couple comments/questions about a possible deeper meaning to the Wheel of Time (FYI, I have been reading WOT for 10 years, It is the only fiction I read not based on history, I think Jordan is a master writer and has uncanny understanding of human emotion, especially women, and wish he would end the damn thing before he dies).

Keeping in mind Jordan's disclaimer that WOT if purely fiction, and that any references to recognizable names and stories are purely coincidence, I have noticed some striking parallels to currant physical and spiritual questions, and have found understanding for concepts like astral projection, different world planes and how to navigate them, negative and positive energy, acceptance of multiple cultural and spiritual beliefs . . .

1. Have any of you noticed that there is no organized Religion or direct reference to God and the Devil? They never go to church, say prayers, or name the One Source . . ..
2. Has everyone caught that the whole series is a direct parallel to the Book of Revelations in the New Testament; Final battle, return of the Savior, the 7 trumpets, the 7 vials, the horsemen, etc.
3. For anyone into the return of the Feminine Sprit and/or post apocalyptic survival, doesn't the Aes Sedai and Warder relationship (yin yang exchange of energy and power) serve as an interesting model for future spirituality and physical unions???

Put that in your pipe and puff on it for a while, I would be interested in all reasonable feedback . . .

I'm a huge fan of fantasy epic's and this series is that and more, but it's coming to a point where more and more fans will be alienated by the snail's pace of forward progression. Jordan has ruined me when it comes to patience. I get so frustrated with any fantasy series that takes too long to go somewhere. George R. R. Martin's books are a great example. I like Martin's story its really good but am I paranoid when I wonder if George R. R. Martin is a pseudonym for Robert Jordan or vice versa? Because a Song of Ice and Fire is well on its way to taking forever to end. 3 books in 8 years! Come on at least Jordan wrote the first 6 books in 5 years. <And don't even get me started on Goodkind. Hey I like a serial novel as much as the next guy but he has taken it to the extreme. When his novels end they only lack that "dun dun dun" sound from the old radio shows and mystery programs!> Jordan really needs to do a bang up job on the next one so I can get rid of the sour aftertaste Crossroads left me with. Frustration aside, I still plan on doing the same thing I always do once I know the street date for Jordan's next book. Get a part time job at B&N so I can read the book before its released.

Don't know if this is old news or if anyone cares anymore but here goes anyway. There is a ton of new info on the tor website concerning the new book and an internet hunt contest:

KNIFE OF DREAMS
BOOK ELEVEN OF
THE WHEEL OF TIME

Internationally bestselling author Robert Jordan’s eleventh book in his wildly popular The Wheel of Time™ series, KNIFE OF DREAMS, will go on-sale nation-wide this October 11, 2005. KNIFE OF DREAMS will be the second to last book in the highly acclaimed The Wheel of Time™ series, the last three books of which have all been #1 New York Times bestsellers.

Jordan, who is a graduate of The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in physics, has been lauded by The New York Times for his extraordinary story-telling ability: “the books’ battle scenes have the breathless urgency of firsthand experience, and the ambiguities in these novels—the evil laced into the forces of good, the dangers latent in any promised salvation, the sense of the unavoidable onslaught of unpredictable events—bear the marks of American national experience during the last three decades, just as the experience of the First World War and its aftermath gave its imprint to Tolkien’s work.”

In KNIFE OF DREAMS, the dead are walking, men are dying impossible deaths, and it seems as though reality itself has become unstable: all are signs of the imminence of the Last Battle, when Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, must confront the Dark One as humanity’s only hope. But Rand dares not fight until he possesses all the surviving seals on the Dark One’s prison. And he

faces other dangers—there are those among the Forsaken who will go to any length to see him dead . . . The winds of time have become a storm, and things that everyone believed were fixed in place forever are changing before their eyes. Now Rand must ride those storm winds, or the Dark One will triumph.

With over 12 million copies of The Wheel of Time™ series sold in North America, Tor will be publishing KNIFE OF DREAMS with an first printing of a million copies. Tor will also be promoting KNIFE OF DREAMS with an Internet Hunt where participants will have the opportunity to navigate through twelve sites by solving a series of riddles. The solution to each riddle will lead to the URL of the next site.

Multiple prizes are planned for winning participants. In July, Tor will announce the internet hunt on participating Jordan websites and other mainstream and genre sites. Participants will be directed to a Knife of Dreams site www.knifeofdreams.com to register themselves for the hunt.

Well, it's an old one for me . . . www.WoTMUD.org. It's a multi-user dungeon, which for the uninitiated, is a text-based role-playing game online. This one is actaully sanctioned by Robert Jordan, and I can honestly say, if you dig WoT and RPGs, this will knock your socks off. It's fun, pretty accurate re: the world of WoT (they just open the Isle of Madmen), and there is action for both player-killers and role-players.
There's been some trouble with the recently moved server of late, but you should check it out if you get the chance. Try looking up Liudmilla or Arsinoe if you need assistance, though I haven't been on much recently.

Thus... this prequel is a breath of fresh air. So far I'm enjoying the pace, with Jordans classic descriptions in good balance.
Plus, I am tickled to have Moiraine back in the land of living again.
(I have a soft spot for Siuan as well) These two dominate these early chapters, but I don't mind... Jordan lets us feel that innocent excitement that small-time people feel in the face of big-time events.
Plus the Aiel appearance so far is more like a bad-ass cool cameo.
They always know what's going on (some of them anyway)

I'll enjoy this little book, even if he doesn't wrap up anything for a few books... He has to dovetail it into book one eventually (doesn't he?)

Welcome to the People of the Dragon. Please feel free to discuss your feelings about the books, characters, the author, any crackpot theories you have, etc.

The one request that I have is that when new books come out, please make sure to avoid posting any spoilers for at least a few months, unless the FIRST POST of the thread has "SPOILER WARNING" in the subject line. If there's a spoiler comment you want to make in an existing non-spoiler thread, please feel free to post a new thread with the spoiler warning, and a message in the old thread directing people's attention to the new thread. I just want to preserve any surprises for those of us who are looking forward to them. I may go so far as to delete threads that have spoilers and no warnings, but I really don't want to have to do that, so please be courteous.

Obviously, there is no way to prevent spoilers for those who have not read previous books, as any discussion that goes on in here will be about all books that are currently out. Therefore, I'm keeping my boyfriend clear of this entire tribe until he's caught up to us.

Above all, enjoy yourselves. The tediousness of Jordan's writing does NOT have to translate to the writing in this tribe! :)
