A Deeper Meaning . . .
Hi, I am new to the tribe, and thought I would kick start the New Year with a couple comments/questions about a possible deeper meaning to the Wheel of Time (FYI, I have been reading WOT for 10 years, It is the only fiction I read not based on history, I think Jordan is a master writer and has uncanny understanding of human emotion, especially women, and wish he would end the damn thing before he dies).
Keeping in mind Jordan's disclaimer that WOT if purely fiction, and that any references to recognizable names and stories are purely coincidence, I have noticed some striking parallels to currant physical and spiritual questions, and have found understanding for concepts like astral projection, different world planes and how to navigate them, negative and positive energy, acceptance of multiple cultural and spiritual beliefs . . .
1. Have any of you noticed that there is no organized Religion or direct reference to God and the Devil? They never go to church, say prayers, or name the One Source . . ..
2. Has everyone caught that the whole series is a direct parallel to the Book of Revelations in the New Testament; Final battle, return of the Savior, the 7 trumpets, the 7 vials, the horsemen, etc.
3. For anyone into the return of the Feminine Sprit and/or post apocalyptic survival, doesn't the Aes Sedai and Warder relationship (yin yang exchange of energy and power) serve as an interesting model for future spirituality and physical unions???
Put that in your pipe and puff on it for a while, I would be interested in all reasonable feedback . . .

Sun, March 11, 2007 - 10:17 PMHi AP! I have found many parallels also, and though I am too sleepy to enumerate them now, I do feel that at times it is as if Sr. Jordan has tapped into a spiritual... river? flow?.... that most people miss.
I do enjoy the fact that instead of "God" and "Satan", his world has only light and dark... no need to give names to the balancing powers that are the universe! (Well, I take that back, somewhat, there is Shaitan, but he seems to only be an agent of dark, not the cause of it). These people don't have the need to practice or worship, they just exist in their beliefs. Of course, even with in his world, there are teh fanatics, the Whitecloaks and the Darkfriends. But the lack of organization, along with EVERYONE knowing light and dark, right and wrong, just feels right. Acknowledging that there are opposing forces in nature, without organizing and using those forces to control the masses. As the whitecloaks attempt to do that very thing, they are reviled, and (hopefully) their attempts will fail!
I had fantasized about the warder/Aes Sedai relationship for myself before, but had not thought of it in quite the way you presented... wouldn't it be nice to have that type of exchange and connection in relationships? Not only in the male/female, but in close friendships, such as Elaine and Aviendha exprience as near-sisters. I have many times wondered that even though this is all fiction and a figments of Jordan's fertile imagination if it isn't some type of precursor to us actually forming these relationships ourselves? After all, as far-fetched and silly as it sounds, science fiction writers have for decades been many years ahead of the actual discoveries, inventions, and progresses made in science. What a beautiful thing if soon we as a society can look back at the fantasy books of today and think, "I don't see the big deal, these occurences and connections are commonplace" or "Wow, he was ahead of his time!"
