I have become disillusioned with WoT and I have been shopping around for a worthwile series from a good author that uses tighter language than Jordan (less verbose at least). Before I feel into the WoT trap, I mostly read Horror (King), so other than LOTR and some Dungeons and Dragons books, I am relatively new to the Fantasy genre.
I was wondering if you guys could recommend some authors, books, or series that are worth reading?
Thanks,

Re: Fantasy Series Recommendations?
Fri, July 9, 2004 - 12:22 PMI would suggest Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, but thats another long series thats not finished yet. Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel Trilogy is another good one if you don't mind politics and sexual sadism. Stephen R Donaldson's Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through, also his Covenant series are excellent. Any series by David Eddings is pretty decent. I could go on and one and on, but I'm going to stop now. ;) -

Re: Fantasy Series Recommendations?
Fri, July 9, 2004 - 1:14 PMOh oh oh I remebered another series that I have to reread! It's by Piers Anthony and Robert E. Margroff. The first book is called Dragon's Gold. Then it goes: Serpent's Silver, Chimera's Copper, Orc's Opal, and finally Mouvar's Magic. They are a little weird and I read then when I was like 13 years old, but to my memeory they were pretty good.

Wed, July 14, 2004 - 8:51 PMDonaldson's Mordant's Need books ("A Man Ride Through" and "The Mirrir of Her Dreams") are good bets, as is George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. -

Re: Fantasy Series Recommendations?
Thu, July 29, 2004 - 1:50 PMPerdido Street Station and The Scar by China Mieville are EXCELLENT books!! They aren't really a series but they take place on the same planet... I have already read them both several times... Perdido is my flavorite
I second the Fire and Ice series... but the delay in the release of the fourth book has me a little nervous...
Jaqueline Carey's Kushiel series was excellent trash... I enjoyed reading it... but it was predictable and unchallenging the only thing that really set it apart from your typical erotic fantasy was the fact that the main character was a masochist... still I'd recommend it. -

Re: Fantasy Series Recommendations?
Fri, July 30, 2004 - 10:00 PMI would reccomend the George R.R. Martin books, of course I am partial to knights and all that. I found them to be a refreshing dose of dark reality. One of my personal favorites. I do recall enjoying the novels of David Eddings immensely, but then again.. I enjoyed the Weis/Hickman Dragonlance books during that timeframe...
I am currently reading Asimov's Foundation series, although not fantasy, I am finding it unique! Also, Robin Hobbs.. I believe thats the name, wrote an enjoyable series. -

Re: Fantasy Series Recommendations?
Mon, September 18, 2006 - 5:02 PMas the other two above have already mentioned (some time ago), and in case you haven't read them yet, George R. R. Martin has a short series of books called titled Tales of Ice and Fire -- VERY good. Should remedy your lacking stamina for long winded writers like Mr. Jordan.
