Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 9:22 AMOh, I got through it, but if he doesn't give me more than a 600-page rehash of the final 3 days of the previous book next time, I'm gonna have a hissy-fit! -

Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 1:25 PMTis true, tis true... he's gotten soooo lax and verbose it's not even funny, but stupid me just can't stop reading - it's such good escape, even if nothing happens for looooong stretches of time. I won't quit the series ever, but my opinion of RJ is continually decreasing. -

Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Fri, October 24, 2003 - 1:52 PMThe last two books have pissed me off a lot. He's supposed to be wrapping things up, but he's introducing NEW CHARACTERS! He's obviously got enough on his hands wrapping up the first 3000 plotlines, so he should not be adding more.
I'm rereading the series for the 6th or 7th time now because I'm trying to get it fresh in my mind to help with setting up a WOT RPG campaign. It's more and more apparent with every reading how ham-fisted he is with his writing. He has great ideas, but really lacks anything close to finesse.
My boyfriend is currently reading the series for the first time, and noticing the flaws in RJ's writing style that I only picked up on 2 or 3 readings ago. We have decided that when we get married, we will spend our honeymoon travelling (not Travelling, but I wish) to wherever Jordan lives, and kneecapping him. -

The Very Wrong Crossroads (Book 10)
Sun, November 9, 2003 - 10:24 PMmm. if Jordan says one more word about Elayne's (for her utter stupidity she deserved to be kidnapped - good riddance!) creaky chair i'll join the christian right and burn his books in the name of jesus! and he managed to forget Nynaeve the entire book! she simply doesn't appear. it's like matt in book 9. dude, you're misplacing main characters left and right. book 10 lacked one important thing that no book in print should - an EDITOR!!! Tor Books must be smoking crack to print that crap. seriously. the fact that the aes sedai and perrin are in the exact same situation in the end as in the beginning of this book is a fatal flaw - nothing happens in this book at all. makes me begin to question Jordan's intelligence. and yeah, Moiraine, i am beginning to notice the flaws in his writing skills as well. would you post the FAQ url in your tribe description? this might be useful for the less addicted online jordan fans.
if you're craving some good fantasy and need a fix while jordan's off smoking crack with the tor books people, read George R.R. Martins 'A Song of Fire and Ice' series. That is some serious writing, the characters are way more developed (and more intriguing) and it is such a page-turner, stay-up-all-night-reading series! Read it and thank me by making an equivalent recommendation!
nevertheless, yeah i want to see what happens and will probably break down and read book 11. but if jordan doesn't shape up, i'll help you guys break his kneecaps.

Re: The Very Wrong Crossroads (Book 10)
Mon, November 10, 2003 - 1:00 PMI remember when Tim first introduced me to the series. I said something to the effect of, "What? I'm gonna read how many books by the guy who couldn't handle Conan the Barbarian without stumbling over his own linguistic ineptitude?"
Then I gave book one a try, and I was mesmerized. Holy Cow! Maybe Jordan can write his way out of a wet paper bag. Then I reached the point (too late of course, because I was already hooked) where it became apparent that the reason each book was averaging 800 pages was Jordan's insistence on providing the same lengthy verbatim desriptions over and over and...
Well, I guess that's not so bad. But then, just when I thought I could deal with his propensity for reused description, he takes it to the extreme and provides me with the literary equivalent of a 'Seinfeld' episode - a book about absolutely nothing!
Argh... that's seven hours of my life I can never get back. And the worst part is, I'll still go on and read the rest of the books. I've even pre-ordered my copy of the novel-size version of his Moiraine-meets-Lan short story "New Spring".
And I agree - Martin is a good choice to kill the next couple of years while we wait for book eleven (as Jordan re-releases the 1/2-book-at-a-time illustrated copies of the first ten) ...or you can read anything by either Stephen Brust or Joel Rosenberg. Between the two of them, they appear to be trying to give fantasy a good name in literary circles. They have produced some of the most lucid prose published in the past twenty years. -

Re: The Very Wrong Crossroads (Book 10)
Sun, January 25, 2004 - 5:47 PMYes Jordan is in need of an editor with balls. Evidently the publishing house has given Jordan free reign to write long drawn out crap, because he's the best they've got. He's like a caudled child. I'm still not finished the damn tenth because I haven't been that drawn into it as past ones. He needs to boost the action sequences. He needs to stop with the fringe plotlines that go nowhere and focus on his main characters.
I love that he got rid of the Taint, I'm anctious to see where that goes. But I fear I may not find out in this book. I believe there will be at least another two books. Or one giant mother of an eleventh.

Re: The Very Wrong Crossroads (Book 10)
Wed, March 3, 2004 - 11:44 AMIn response to the Martin comment... His series is excellent.. but he postponed release of the fourth book like a million times now ... totally frustrating...
And a book recommendation - Perdido Street Station by China Meville A Must Must Must Must read! It is pure genius... I can't even begin to describe it... The Scar- Meiville again- is great as well ...

Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Thu, March 4, 2004 - 4:02 PMI am so mad about this book! I had a hard time getting through 8, kind of enjoyed 9, and now 10 is just lame. I'm almost done, and I'm still waiting for something to happen. Does no one read his books before they are published? It's ridiculous! It shouldn't take 400 pages just to describe what happened in the previous book from other points of view.
I'm so in love with his characters, and I hate that he's not doing anything with them. Of course, like everyone else, I will continue to read them. One or two really bad ones may make me quit, though. -

Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Sat, March 6, 2004 - 12:30 PMI have to agree. I tend to go back to the days of my first readings of the first few books. Such magic then, now.. well now I am connected to the characters and almost feel as though I'd betray them by NOT reading the next 4 books about their point of view on the first 4 books. I did enjoy the prequel, as it gave some much needed substance to the days before Rand and his killing crew. Usually I feel a sense of loss after I finish a series but I can see a sense of relief once he finishes. I've had this fear that he's going to fall down the stairs or have a heart attack before he finishes. I've enjoyed RJ's character development so much, I wish he'd continue. I'd love to hear more about Mazrim Taim, Logain and Faile (love the attitude). I have read what George R.R. put out, but I think its time to reintroduce myself to his books. Nice to hear some other advice on time between RJ novels. I've read a lot of fantasy and believe that RJ may not be THAT much better with the actual story, but spmehow he's damned good at getting you hooked on his tales. I enjoyed Eddings, Brooks and Feist in my earlier days. I do remember enjoying Robin Hobbs' books, I belive they were the Assassin's Apprentice books.

Re: Crossroads (Book 10)
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 5:58 PMI loved it. I've loved them all. He'll clearly have to write way more that twelve books, but that's fine by me too. Please, if you do break his kneecaps, don't mention that you're a fan. Last thing we need him to do is stall!
